The Engagement Gap: 7 Reasons Your Interactive Ads Get Clicks But Miss Conversions
A high CTR is usually a good sign that an ad is attracting attention – and that’s true for Interactive Ads, too, of course. This Propeller-exclusive format uses interactive pre-landers to engage users so they can generate particularly strong engagement metrics.
However, clicks don’t always translate into conversions, and that’s when you need to look at what happens after the click.
In this article, we’ve paired up with one of our experts, Viktoria Demskaia (PropellerAds’ Account Strategist), and came up with the top reasons why Interactive Ads can generate strong engagement but weak conversions. In between, we’ve also listed the campaign checks and changes that can help you identify the problem.

7 Reasons Your Interactive Ads Get Clicks but Miss Conversions
With Interactive Ads, a user can click the ad, interact with the pre-lander, visit the advertiser’s landing page, and still leave without converting.
A high CTR therefore doesn’t tell you where the campaign is losing users. For example, users may drop off somewhere between the pre-lander and the final offer. In other cases, the conversion may happen but fail to appear in your PropellerAds statistics because of a tracking issue.
The typical user path usually includes several stages:
Are users clicking?
Does it match the offer?
Are users dropping off?
Does it fit the audience?
Is it being tracked?
Check where users start dropping off before changing the whole campaign.
In the sections below, we collected seven issues that can create a gap between clicks and conversions:
1. Your Conversion Tracking Isn’t Configured Correctly
First things first.
“The first thing to check is whether the postback is configured correctly. It’s possible that conversions are being recorded on the advertiser’s side, but for some reason they’re not being passed to the PropellerAds statistics.”
– Viktoria Demskaia
Before changing the creative, targeting, or offer, check that the conversion pixel or postback is sending completed actions back to the platform correctly.
2. You’re Rotating Offers or Pre-landers in One Campaign
When you launch an Interactive Ads campaign, the interactive creatives are optimized around the offer you are promoting. As the campaign collects data, the optimization algorithm learns which creatives work best for that specific offer and user journey.
If you then replace the offer or pre-lander within the same campaign, the setup changes while the algorithm is still using data from the previous one.
“The creative optimization algorithm doesn’t have enough time to retrain and continues serving creatives optimized for the previous offer.”
– Viktoria Demskaia
Traffic can continue flowing during this period, but conversion rates may drop while the model adjusts to the new setup. Instead of rotating different offers or prelanders in one campaign, run separate campaigns for each combination. Once you have enough data, scale the one that performs best.
3. Your Creative, Pre-lander, and Offer Don’t Match
A strong CTR doesn’t necessarily mean that users are interested in the final offer. They may simply be responding well to the creative or pre-lander, while the offer they see later doesn’t match what they expected.
Based on our experience, the issue advertisers encounter most often is:
“A mismatch between the creative/prelander and the offer category or vertical, rather than the quality of the advertiser’s final landing page itself.”
– Viktoria Demskaia
This makes the connection between the three stages crucial.
For example, an iGaming campaign targeting a gaming audience could use a creative which was built around a new game or giveaway offer, followed by a pre-lander focused on the same game or iGaming experience. If the final landing page instead promotes an unrelated finance or utility offer, the initial click may not translate into a conversion.
4. Your Landing Page Has Too Many Steps
The final landing page doesn’t necessarily need to be complicated to convert. In fact, reducing the number of steps can make a noticeable difference.
We’ve seen campaigns where replacing a complex, multi-step landing page with a simpler one increased traffic to the final page by 2x to 4x.
If users are clicking the Interactive Ad but too few are reaching the final offer, check how many actions they have to complete along the way. Removing unnecessary steps can be worth testing before making larger changes to the campaign itself.

5. Your Targeting Is Too Broad
Imagine you are promoting an iGaming offer to people interested in it. Rather than targeting the entire iGaming audience, you could focus on users interested in a specific category and create a pre-lander around that same interest.
When the user reaches the final offer, it feels like a continuation of what they’ve just clicked on rather than a completely different proposition.
Don’t put all your eggs in the same basket; test whether a more specific audience responds better to the offer.
6. You’re Using the Wrong Optimization Strategy
The campaign’s optimization approach can also influence how it responds to conversion data. One change Demskaia has seen work for campaigns with an engagement-to-conversion gap is:
“Switching from SmartCPM/bid-based optimization to CPA Goal.”
– Viktoria Demskaia
This doesn’t mean CPA Goal is automatically the right choice for every Interactive Ads campaign. It is one change worth testing when the campaign generates engagement but struggles to turn it into conversions.
Pro Tip: You may need other changes at the same time, especially if the campaign has issues with its offer, pre-lander, targeting, or conversion tracking.
7. You’re Looking at CTR Instead of the Full Funnel
When advertisers see a high CTR and low conversion rate, the CTR itself doesn’t tell them where the problem is. Demskaia recommends working through the campaign in the following order.
- Check traffic quality (with the policy department via your account manager or customer support) by looking at specific zones and any abnormal CTR patterns.
- Check the ratio of landing page hits to clicks – to make sure traffic isn’t being lost before reaching the landing page.
- Check whether the postback/conversion pixel is configured correctly.
- Break performance down by zones to identify outlier traffic sources.
This gives advertisers a practical starting point instead of immediately replacing a creative or changing the offer. If the problem is concentrated in a few zones, for example, there may be no reason to rebuild the entire campaign.
Which Verticals Work Best With Interactive Ads?
Interactive Ads are used across several verticals, but some categories have consistently stronger traffic volumes on PropellerAds. iGaming, Giveaway, Finance, and mVAS are among the key verticals for the format.
iGaming
iGaming currently accounts for approximately 25% of Interactive Ads traffic volume, making it the largest vertical among the format’s main traffic categories.
If you’re running an iGaming campaign, audience targeting and the connection between the creative, pre-lander, and offer are particularly important. Redirecting your user to an offer page irrelevant to the landing page can increase bounce rates because this audience is highly sensitive to mismatches.
Basically, it’s like displaying a cat food ad to someone who has a dog – still a pet, but entirely different.
Giveaways
Giveaway is the second-largest vertical by Interactive Ads traffic volume, accounting for approximately 17% of the total. The format is particularly useful for offers where the initial value proposition can be communicated quickly, and the user can take a clear action after the click.
Finance and mVAS
Their inclusion in the list is another reason to look beyond CTR when evaluating a campaign. A vertical can generate substantial Interactive Ads traffic, but individual campaign performance will still depend on factors such as landing-page flow and conversion tracking.
Campaign diagnostic
Clicks are coming in. Conversions are not.
Seven checks, in order. Answer each one and you get the recommended action for that step. Nothing here changes your campaign: it tells you where to look first.
0 / 7 checked
Your campaign may not have an engagement gap.
If clicks and conversions move together, the problem is somewhere else: payout, offer quality, or volume. Run this diagnostic again when the click-to-conversion ratio actually breaks.
Still seeing the gap?
Check individual zones and compare performance before making bigger campaign changes. A gap that survives all seven checks is usually concentrated in a small set of zones, not spread evenly across the campaign.
Diagnostic order matters: fixing tracking before touching targeting saves you a week of bad data.
Final Takeaway
A high CTR doesn’t necessarily mean your Interactive Ads campaign is performing well. If conversions are falling behind, don’t panic and scrap the whole setup just yet. Check where the funnel starts leaking, from traffic quality and tracking to the landing page, targeting, and offer.
Friendly Tip: Find the weak spot, fix it, and test again.
Don’t rush to reinvent the wheel if all you need to do is just stop it from wobbling.
